The invitation to attend and meet the Governor of Wyoming, Matt Mead, in the receiving line at the VA's Medical Center in Sheridan, Wyoming was extended to USS Liberty survivor Ron Kukal by the Director, Wyoming Veterans Commission, Larry Barttelbort. When the Governor and the Wyoming Veterans Commission announced celebrations for the "Wyoming Veterans Welcome Home Day" on April 1, 2013, Ron made it a point to be there to represent the USS Liberty and to present the Governor with a USS Liberty cap.
According to Ron, the Governor was making sure those veterans who were forgotten and left behind were welcomed home. One Vietnam veteran's speech didn't mince any words about the treatment the veterans were given...he described being spat on and called a baby killer. Ron said the Governor told him he heard some good things about him, and that the Governor seemed elated to receive the USS Liberty baseball cap.
