Ron Kukal, a survivor of the June 8, 1967 attack on the USS Liberty was the guest speaker at a Navy Center for Cryptology Detachment celebration of the 228th birthday of the navy on October 18, 2003 at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, TX.
There were well over 300 Navy, Army, Marine and Air Force officers and enlisted gathered at the Holiday Inn there for the night.
Ron laid out what really happened on that day along with presenting pictures of the travesty. Another notch in history of this great nation that very few politicians took notice of.
The dedication of the Liberty Park at Goodfellow and the ribbon cutting ceremony. Colonel Martin Neubauer, Wing Commander and LCDR Ted Dutcher, OIC of the Navy Detachment at Goodfellow were performing the honors. Ron has just learned the Air Force has allotted $16,000 for the improvement of the park. Quite a tidy sum for no bigger than what it is! Ron foresees something quite different in the future.
While speaking about the attack during the Navy ball, a presentation of an official USS LIBERTY cap was made to Colonel Martin Neubauer, Wing Commander at Goodfellow. All the services were represented that night and this also happened to be where Ron went to school back in 1960!
FLASH! A YEAR LATER! 11/20/2004 UPDATE! Ron sends along picture below of Liberty Park after the $16,000 upgrade!
